Deputies responded to a report of a suspect with a weapon entering a residence in the 900 block of Leland Street near Sweetwater Reservoir, north of Jamacha Boulevard and east of State Route 125, around 3:20 p.m. on November 15. – says the sheriff’s office.

According to authorities, a woman reported that her ex-boyfriend entered her home through the back door, armed with a gun and acting erratically. She said the ex-boyfriend also suffered from mental problems and was under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

“When deputies responded, they encountered the reporting party outside and learned that the children were still inside the home and the suspect was in the yard,” sheriff’s officials said. “Deputies entered the home and safely extracted the children to keep them out of harm’s way.”

At approximately 4:30 p.m., the suspect fired at least two shots in the yard, less than 5 meters away from the officers. The department said deputies then took up positions in the street and the suspect re-entered the home.

At approximately 4:55 p.m., the suspect allegedly exited through the front door, raised a gun and pointed it at deputies, and was fired multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The report shows that no officers were injured.

Officials say deputies were wearing body cameras and law enforcement helicopters were overhead during much of the shooting.

The department added that a black semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene.
