Mira Bhayandar: Navghar police arrested and booked a 37-year-old crane driver for causing the death of an elderly woman due to negligence and rash driving in Bhayandar on Wednesday evening.

According to police, the incident took place near Family Care Hospital located in Indralok area of ​​Bhayandar (East) around 5.30 p.m.

The deceased, identified as Rajani Kanade (74), worked as a clerk and retired from BMC a few years ago. She remained in the same place where the incident occurred. As part of her daily activities, the senior went for an evening walk on that memorable day.

As she was crossing the road, an excessive speed and hastily operated crane veered off course at a bend and hit her from behind. The woman died on the spot as a result of her head being crushed after falling under the wheels of a crane. The entire sequence of the mishap was captured by closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed nearby, which went viral on various social media platforms.

Navghar police arrested a crane driver identified as Fassad Ali Naeem Shaikh (37), a resident of Kashimira, and registered an offense against him under Sec. 106 section 1 for causing death by negligence, 281 (rash driving on a public road) of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS)-2023 and Art. 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which concerns dangerous driving.

Calling on the authorities to enforce stricter rules to stop errant drivers of heavy transport vehicles, especially those used for construction work, who have little compliance with road traffic regulations that pose a risk to pedestrians in residential areas. Meanwhile, the accused has been remanded in custody as further investigations are ongoing.
