Because McDaniel has been charged in five separate cases, police have not ruled out the possibility that McDaniel could potentially be connected to other unsolved murders.

Police did not provide a motive, but Fitzgerald of the BPD PIO said, “We are investigating some of these homicides as hired murders.”

The Birmingham Police Department mentioned a “rental payment” as a possible motive during a press conference related to the Five Points South shooting the day after the incident.

McDaniel’s arrest was announced by BPD on October 16. McDaniel made his first court appearance on Oct. 17 before he was charged with another mass shooting and murder in August.

Court records also show McDaniel pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder in 2023 and received a sentence of 15 years split between two years with three years suspended.

ABC 33/40 reached out to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office to ask about McDaniel’s release and whether any future action will be taken to keep violent criminals behind bars.

This story will be updated as we receive a response.

“As far as walking the streets, all the evidence shows they did that, it’s no good,” responded Birmingham resident Harold Johnson.

He said he feels safer for the community knowing that McDaniel, accused in several fatal shootings, is in custody.

“I believe such people should be isolated,” he said.

McDaniel is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.

The Birmingham Police Department is asking anyone with additional information on any of these cases to contact them.
