They added that the accused, identified as Vidya, 28, a resident of Mahantesh Nagar, and her associates are absconding.

Police identified the victim as Pranitkumar, a resident of Dwarakanagar in Tilakwadi. Police said he was attacked while eating dinner at his widow’s house.

Belagavi Police Commissioner Yada Martin told reporters on Thursday that when Vidya came to know that Pranitkumar was in another woman’s house, she stormed the place and confronted him. “Within a few minutes, three other people entered the house and one of them fired two shots. The first bullet went past his head and ear, and the second bullet hit him in the thigh,” Martin said. He added that the attackers tried to fire a third shot, but fled the spot when the weapon stopped working.

The woman with whom Pranitkumar had dinner took him to a government hospital and informed the Malmaruti police. After visiting the injured man in hospital, Martin confirmed that two special teams had been formed to arrest the suspects. The teams are led by ACP Rohan Jagadish.

“We identified the accused based on Pranitkumar’s statement. They intended to kill him and a case of attempt to murder was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. The victim is not in danger,” he added.

ACP Jagadish, who also visited the crime scene, revealed that preliminary investigations revealed that the motive behind the attack was jealousy. “Vidya, who orchestrated the attack, was reportedly in a relationship with Pranitkumar in the past and was furious over his growing closeness to the widow,” he added.

The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Vidya ended her relationship with Pranitkumar four years ago. After learning about his relationship with another woman who lives in the same area, Vidya allegedly stalked him and hatched an attack plan. Malmaruti police have registered a case under section 109 (attempted murder) of the BNS Act and is actively pursuing suspects.
