Gunman shot by officers Phoenix: police

A suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting late Thursday night in Phoenix.

The shooting followed a fight at a grocery store just before 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 nearby 83rd Avenue and McDowell Road.

Phoenix Police say officers responded to the scene after receiving a report of a suspect pulling out a gun and threatening someone. The suspect fled the scene, but the witness was able to provide police with a description of the suspect’s vehicle.

Officers noticed the suspect’s car nearby and tried to stop it, but the driver did not stop and fled.

Police say that the vehicle has been located 79th Avenue and Mitchell Drivewhere the suspect got out of the car and ran into the yard.

The suspect, who allegedly pulled out a gun, was shot and killed by Phoenix police officers on Nov. 28 near 79th Avenue and Mitchell Drive. The suspect could not be identified.

“Officers arrived in the area and began securing the home,” said Sgt. said Rob Scherer. “While doing so, they heard what they believed to be a gunshot coming from the backyard of the residence.”

The officers then noticed a man matching the suspect’s description.

“The man was seen with a gun in his hand and raising it in the air,” Scherer said. “That’s when the officer was involved in a shooting occurred.”

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been identified.

Area 79th Avenue and Mitchell Drive is closed for investigation.
