Silvia Pinal, the “last great diva” of Mexican cinema, has died at the age of 93

Sylwia Pinal, a giant of Mexican cinema died on Thursday at the age of 93.

“The Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico mourns the loss of leading actress Silvia Pinal. In her over sixty-year career, she has appeared in over 60 films and theater productions. Her legacy remains an essential pillar of cinema, theater and television in Mexico. Rest in peace,” wrote the Mexican Ministry of Culture message to X The actress’s death was announced on Thursday. USA TODAY translated the post.

Her Instagram account too posted a tributea photo of Pinal with her signature bleached blonde along with the caption: “Farewell to the last great diva of Mexican cinema: Ms. Silvia Pinal.”

Born in Guayamas, Sonora, Mexico in 1931, Pinal became a favorite of both the big and silver screen during the Mexican film The golden age of cinema.

Pinal, a stage and film actor, made a splash in 1949 with the film “La Mujer que yo perdí”, playing alongside the legendary ranchera singer and main character Pedro Infante. She went on to play alongside many of Mexico’s biggest male stars, including Cantinflas and Germany’s Valdés “Tin-Tán”.

As her star status began to transcend boundaries, Pinal established her international acclaim with a trilogy of films by surrealist director Luis Buñuel. In “Viridian” (1961), “The Exterminating Angel” (1962) and “Simon of the Desert” (1965), the actress played out bold and absurd scenarios.

Already an undeniable part of the country’s cultural fabric, Pinal entered politics later in life, after marrying the governor of the state of Tlaxcala, Tulio Hernández. She then held several offices herself and headed the main Mexican actors’ union.

Rising to fame at a time when Hollywood stars were expected to be the place to be for acting, singing and dancing, Pinal was a quadruple threat, adding a strong set of comedic chops to that list.

“I offer my deepest condolences to the Pinal family on the death of the wonderful actress, Mrs. Silvia Pinal, the monarch” – Mexican singer-songwriter Ana Gabriel wrote on X, “I wish with all my heart, dear friend, that your soul will fly high and that you will soon reach the Almighty, where you will be accepted as you were, the Great among the Great.”
