Police were called to junction 9 of the M65 motorway in the early hours of this morning

A horse was killed and four people injured in a crash on the M65.

Police were called after reports that two horses were loose on the road at junction 9 near Hapton at around 02:34 GMT.

Two vehicles hit one of the horses, followed by a second collision involving three vehicles.

Lancashire Police said four people suffered minor injuries and a second horse was safely removed from the road.

The eastbound carriageway between Junction 8 and Junction 10 was closed but has now reopened.
