Home affairs official among suspects arrested for facilitating illegal marriages

Three suspects, including an employee of the Department of Home Affairs, are expected to appear before the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, October 30, in connection with the alleged marriage of South African women to foreigners during secret office in Greyville, Durban.

The suspects were arrested at their office in Greyville, Durban, on Monday, October 28, following an intelligence-led operation.

POLICE DISCOVERED A DOMESTIC OFFICE IN GRAYVILLE

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesman in KwaZulu-Natal, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said the suspects were obtaining identity documents from South African women and marrying them off to strangers, especially undocumented foreigners, so that the fake husbands could obtain South African citizenship.

Netshiunda said initial investigations have so far identified an internal affairs official who cooperated with the suspects, and more arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation progresses.

“Several application forms, copies of identity documents and electronic devices were seized. Of the three suspects, two men will be charged with fraud, and the woman will face charges of defeating the ends of justice after she tried to conceal evidence by tearing up some documents and throwing them in the trash. The suspects are expected to appear before the Durban Magistrates Court on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.” Netshiunda explained.
