LPSS meetings start today, with a large turnout expected due to proposals to close schools

LAFAYETTE PARISH — The first LPSS District Optimization community meeting is expected to draw a crowd as parents oppose several recommendations in the Lafayette Parish School District.

If approved by the school board, the recommendations could lead to the closure of seven schools and other significant changes.

The proposals could impact more than 3,000 students in Lafayette Parish Schools.

LPPS says district optimization is part of its effort to operate more efficiently and save taxpayers money.

However, parents argue that the proposals are broad in scope, may have a negative impact on students’ learning and lack transparency in the process.

Parents and alumni have expressed their frustration with the proposed closures via social media.

Meanwhile, Comeaux High School parents have started a petition to keep the school open because it is one of seven schools scheduled to close.

Today’s meeting will be held at Northside High School at 6:00 p.m. The next round of meetings is scheduled for Tuesday, October 29, in the following locations:

  • October 29 at 6 p.m. at Acadiana High
  • October 29 at 6 p.m. at Southside High
