Suspect in deadly East Nashville attack surrenders to Metro Police

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A man wanted in connection with a deadly attack in East Nashville has turned himself in to Metro Nashville Police (MNPD), authorities said.

Thirty-five-year-old Clifford Jones Jr. surrendered on an outstanding murder warrant. MNPD said the warrant was issued in connection with the fatal assault of 59-year-old James Sutton.

Police added that Jones was identified as a suspect during the investigation, which was confirmed by surveillance video that showed Jones visiting an auto shop wearing the same clothes as before the fatal attack.

Preliminary findings show that officers were called to the scene who were most likely involved in a road accident. However, police said further investigation revealed it was a murder.

Surveillance footage also shows Sutton was knocked to the ground during a physical altercation. According to MNPD, Sutton was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died. Authorities added that the investigation confirmed that Sutton was never struck by a vehicle.

Jones’ bail was set at $40,000, according to MNPD.
