Former South Carolina State student charged with attempted murder after shooting

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCBD) – State law enforcement has charged a former South Carolina State University student with shooting into a crowd of his peers.

The agency said Melvin Anthony Williams, 21, was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime on Oct. 24 by the South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement.

S.C. State Police asked SLED to investigate following the shooting.

Williams allegedly fired into a crowd of students on campus and struck one in the leg on March 3, 2023 – state orders arrest.

The First District Solicitor’s Office will prosecute the case against Williams. He was booked into the Orangeburg County Jail.
