Democrats did better when it came to voting by mail, with about 43% of votes cast (or 79,552) compared to 30% (or 55,548) for registered Republicans. 2024 ELECTION LIVE UPDATE: THE LATEST NEWS ON THE TRUMP-HARRIS PRESIDENTIAL RACE

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), who is running for re-election, agreed social media to share a video of the scene his opponent, former Republican Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, encountered during her Sunday visit to an early voting site in Miami-Dade.

@debbieforFL showed up at the early voting site and found out why Miami-Dade is red,” the Florida senator wrote.

The county, which was a key blue Democratic stronghold, has begun to turn pink in recent years. According to the county elections manager, Democrats maintain a narrow lead just 45,399 registered voters over Republicans. These numbers are in stark contrast to the situation four years ago Democrats had 200,939 more registered voters than the Republican Party.

County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera also celebrated the numbers, and on Thursday there was a twist.

“We are witnessing a seismic shift in Miami-Dade County politics, with Republicans outperforming Democrats in voter turnout thanks to a 20-point lead in early voting,” Cabrera said in a post about Xformerly known as Twitter.

“This surge is fueled by the incredible enthusiasm behind Donald Trump, particularly among minority and working-class voters,” he said. “These traditionally Democratic voters are turning out to Trump in unprecedented numbers, largely because of Kamala Harris’s radically liberal agenda, which many find unappealing.”

Signs of this change emerged in 2022, when Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) not only won re-election but he fell over Miami-Dade County. DeSantis InON the county by 12 percentage points, and Rubio won by nine percent, a significant margin for any Republican.

In recent years, the state has done just that moved against Republicans, with the GOP holding the governor’s mansion, the state legislature and most of the congressional delegations. In 2020, President Joe Biden won Miami-Dade by 7.3% in 2020 over former President Donald Trump, but Trump won the state overall by 51.2%. By comparison, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton won Miami-Dade over Trump with a 29.6% majority, but Trump won the entire state with 49.1%.

While the initial vote tallies for Republicans in Florida and across the country appear good, GOP consultants and operatives caution against reading too much into them.

“Look, the early vote numbers are encouraging, but you just don’t know 100 percent. Are these voters who wouldn’t show up on election day, or are they just voting earlier this time because it’s easier these days? We just don’t know,” said Brian Walsh, a Republican strategist. “I see there is a lot of reason for cautious optimism.”
