Experts from the University of Virginia share the benefits of mental health screening in schools

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Experts say from kindergarten through senior school, mental health screenings help them identify students at risk for mental health problems.

In their research, experts have found that a large percentage of students experiencing mental health problems do not have a trusted adult at school.

Therefore, building relationships between school staff and students can open the door to better communication.

They also claim that students’ mental health improves when they have a reason for going to school other than studying.

“We look at students from different demographics, from different socioeconomic areas, regardless of race, and the primary factor that was important for all children is their level of safety and good mental health. “Until this issue is resolved, basically the entire building will be full of students who cannot learn until we determine why they cannot learn is rooted in their mental health,” said Patrick White, a middle school teacher.
