Who is Jenna Wang? Tim Walz had a secret affair with the daughter of a Chinese Communist Party official, but abandoned her during a teaching internship in China

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz had an affair with the daughter of a Chinese Communist Party official during his teaching career in China that was so tempestuous that it almost drove her to the brink of suicide. Jenna Wang, 59, claims Walz showered her with gifts and seduced her in his apartment at No. 1 Secondary School in Foshan, Guangdong Province.

Wang told the New York Post that she fell deeply in love with Walz when he was a young English teacher in Foshan. Wang expected their 1989 romance to end with a marriage proposal, but instead it ended in a breakup, causing her to consider suicide.

Wang told the website that the couple had to avoid holding hands and public displays of affection because her father was a high-ranking Chinese Communist Party official who would disown her for having a relationship with a Westerner.

Still, their relationship blossomed behind closed doors, where they drank tea, made love and listened to George Michael songs, inspiring 24-year-old Wang to imagine marriage and a new life in the United States.

However, no proposal has been received from Minnesota’s current governor. Instead, Wang says, the feeling of being “like a prostitute” filled her with shame, anger and, ultimately, suicidal thoughts.

“I felt deeply offended, hurt and had to leave the place because many people knew we had a relationship,” Wang said, adding that Walz had suggested he planned to marry her.

Wang said that after she returned to the United States the following summer, Walz continued to send her letters and even asked for a passport-sized photo of her to be sent to Denver, suggesting that he was helping her with the visa process.

“The lack of character of a man, a responsible person who worked in education or the military,” she added. “I thought he loved me too. I loved him.”

The Daily Mail first reported the allegations against Wang, who revealed that she left China for Italy just a few years after her failed relationship with Walz.

In an open letter intended to warn American voters against Walz, Wang described how in the beginning they were “like husband and wife” – drinking tea and holding hands in private, away from her father, Bin Hui, a trade union leader in her hometown of Guilin.

Walz, now 60, came to China through the nonprofit WorldTeach, where he met Wang, who taught at a nearby middle school. The young couple spent time together singing karaoke, and Walz gave Wang gifts such as gold jewelry and high-waisted blue jeans.

However, in his open letter, Wang describes Walz as ultimately “the kind of man whose mother warns her daughter not to get involved.”

“While it is true that you did not promise marriage before returning to China, I assumed marriage,” she wrote. “Also, marriage is what you convinced me to believe in, and you also convinced others, including that friend of yours we were having tea with.”

Wang recalled a misunderstanding in which Walz questioned whether she truly loved him or was only interested in obtaining a visa. She said the accusation “shocked” her because she was willing to leave her entire life in China to join him in his home state of Nebraska.

“I gave up to be with Tim, get married and start a family,” Wang told the Daily Mail.

“Knowing now that he wasn’t going to marry me made me feel cheap and common, like I was being treated like a prostitute.”

Walz and Wang never met again, although he returned to China in 1993 to lead an annual summer program connecting high school students from Nebraska and Minnesota with Chinese institutions.

After returning to the US, the future governor Minnesota he married Gwen Whipple the following year. They chose June 4, the fifth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, as their wedding date so that he would “always remember this date,” Gwen later recalled.

“Tim lied Tiananmen Square and lied about other things,” Wang told the Daily Mail.

“This is a very important moment in history and such a man does not seem to have the character and integrity to do one of the most important jobs in the world.”
