A rookie state trooper faces charges following a crash in Tewksbury

Local news

James Doran, 27, was arrested Sunday evening in Tewksbury.

A man who recently graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy will be charged with driving under the influence after crashing into another car in Tewksbury, WBZ, on Sunday night reports.

Court records show 27-year-old James Doran is charged with driving under the influence and possession of an open container of alcohol. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Tewksbury Police responded to a report of an accident on Main Street near Clark Road on Sunday evening around 11 p.m. according to WBZ. Police said a car registered to Doran struck the rear of another vehicle, and responding officers reported that the 27-year-old and another man in his car were unsteady on their feet, had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol.

Court documents show Doran’s passenger initially claimed he was driving, but officers found the man’s phone on the passenger-side floorboard, according to WBZ. Damage to the passenger side windshield was allegedly consistent with a cut to the man’s head.

Doran allegedly later told police he had been driving and had “a few drinks.” According to WBZ, he allegedly refused to submit to a breathalyzer test and a field sobriety test.

Doran graduated from the police academy on October 9 and worked at the Leominster barracks, by station. He was in the same class as Enrique Delgado-Garciawho died on September 13 after losing consciousness during a training exercise.

According to WBZ, new state troopers are on a one-year probationary period with the department after graduating from the academy.

Doran was arraigned on Monday, according to court records. He was ordered to surrender his driving license and will return to court in early December.
