A car crashes into the fence of an Australian school, injuring five children

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – A car crashed into a Melbourne school on Tuesday, injuring five children, including one in critical condition, police said.

According to police, a car crashed into the fence of Auburn South Elementary School just after 2:30 p.m. local time.

“One child was taken to hospital in critical condition and four others were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” the statement read.

The driver has been detained and will be questioned, police said, adding that the causes of the accident will be investigated.

According to Australia Broadcasting Corp, the injured children were sitting on a park bench.

A Department of Education spokesman declined to comment to The Associated Press.
