A child was killed and three other people injured after a car collided with an Australian school

Police said a child was killed and three other people injured after a car collided with a primary school in Australia.

Victoria Police confirmed the car was traveling along Burgess Road in Hawthorn East when it struck the school fence at around 2.30pm local time.

The car went off the road, hitting a fence and a group of children sitting on a bench at Auburn South Primary School, located about four miles east of the Victorian capital of Melbourne.

The driver, a 40-year-old woman from Hawthorn East, was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody.

Her passenger, a school-age child, was not injured.

One 11-year-old boy with serious injuries was taken to hospital, but fortunately he died.

Two 11-year-olds, a girl and a boy, suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital. A 10-year-old boy was also taken to hospital in serious condition.

Investigators from the main collision investigation unit are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.

The injured children were sitting on a park bench, an anonymous Department of Education official told national broadcaster ABC.

A Department of Education spokesman declined to comment to The Associated Press.
