Jeff Bezos, owner of the Washington Post, defended the newspaper’s decision not to support the presidential candidate.

For decades, the editorial office – separate from the journalists working there – supported the future president. With less than two weeks until the premiere, the publisher of “Post” announced that it would not do it this time.

Bezos, who is also Amazon’s chief executive, argued that publishing the endorsement – which was designed to recommend Kamala Harris – would undermine readers’ confidence in the newspaper’s integrity.

“The president’s endorsements do not in any way tip the scales of the election” – Bezos he wrote, external in paper.

“In fact, the president’s endorsement creates the appearance of bias. Perception of lack of independence,” he continued. “Ending them is a principled and right decision.”

The decision to break with decades of tradition and withhold the release of the endorsement for a few days was met with a backlash, both internally among staff and externally among readers.

According to NPR, an estimated 200,000 people canceled their subscriptions over the controversy.
