Jewish community ‘shocked’ after Chicago man shot dead on his way to synagogue and attacker fired at police

AND Man from Chicago A suspect walking to a synagogue in a prominent Orthodox Jewish neighborhood was shot over the weekend by the suspect, who then fired at officers and paramedics, officials said.

The attack targeting a 39-year-old man took place on Saturday morning in the West Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. Police said the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, was identified less than 30 minutes after the shooting, when he allegedly fired at rescuers before police “returned fire, striking the perpetrator.” Police said they found a weapon at the scene and that Abdallahi was “placed in custody, transported to a local hospital, and appropriate charges were subsequently filed against him.”

“We are gathered here today for an event that has shaken my community to its core,” 50th Ward Councilwoman Debra Silverstein said during a Monday news conference where police announced Abdallahi had been charged with 14 charges, including six counts of attempted murder. Silverstein expressed frustration that no hate crime charges have yet been filed.

“I am concerned about the lack of hate crime charges in this case. While the motive is still under investigation, the community is rightly concerned given the nature and timing of the attack,” Silverstein said.

“While we respect the legal process and understand that charging decisions are complex, I, like many people in my community, urge that all aspects of this case, including bias and hate motivations, be fully investigated,” she later added.

Police are tight-lipped about some details of the incident, with reporters questioning Superintendent Larry Snelling about any statements the suspect may have made while shooting at officers and paramedics, after video of the incident shows him screaming something.

“Yes, this person stated something when he was exchanging gunfire with the officers,” Snelling said. When asked what it was, Snelling passed the podium to another judge.

“Statements made at the time he contacted our officers are nothing that we can present as evidence at this time that would support his motives for his actions towards our officers or our victim,” the second officer said, adding: “We publish this information now because I want to make sure I don’t get anything wrong.”

The reporter asked what language the statement was in, but no one answered the question. Chicago police refused to give Fox News Digital any information about these statements.

Asked whether Abdallahi was a U.S. citizen, Snelling said it was under investigation. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told Fox News Digital that the agency “has not had any contact with this individual at this time.” The FBI admitted its involvement in the investigation.

Silverstein noted that “the shooting occurred on the Sabbath after the Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah.”

Snelling also noted that although no officers or paramedics were hit by gunfire during the shooting, an ambulance was hit.
