Srinagar- In a heartbreaking incident that highlighted the poverty of downtrodden families in Kashmir, a fourteen-year-old student from Tirgam, Sonawari, allegedly tried to commit suicide by taking many pills after her family found it difficult to pay her school fees.

After the suicide attempt, she was taken to JVC Hospital in Bemin, where doctors performed gastric lavage and gave her intensive therapy. The girl was admitted for two days and fortunately survived.

According to JVC’s prescription, a copy of which is in the possession of the Kashmir Observer, the girl, whose identity has been withheld, reportedly took around 20 pills at random.

In accordance with the doctor’s prescription, she took random tablets on October 14, had her stomach washed out and was treated conservatively. After her health condition stabilized, she was discharged on October 16.

Her family claims that the only reason she attempted suicide was because she lacked the financial means to pay her school fees.

Her uncle, Mohammad Hussain, spoke to Kashmir Observer about the family’s situation. He explained how her father had tried various businesses but had suffered repeated failures.

“He tried everything he could, but every attempt ended in failure. Eventually, he even sold all his land to start an animal husbandry business and bought cattle from Punjab. But soon after, all the cattle died, plunging the family into even greater poverty,” Hussain said.

Hussain claimed that the family’s financial problems were putting enormous stress on the girl, which ultimately led her to feel like she had no way out.

“Poverty had reduced her to such a state that she thought suicide was the only escape,” Hussain said.

Interestingly, unlike many cases where school authorities may have put pressure on students over unpaid fees, this girl’s school was understanding and patient.

The school fee receipt shows that the school in Odina village, where the girl studies in class 6, the school even offered her a discount of Rs 20,000 on her school fees. However, the remaining amount is still around Rs 90,000, which is a huge sum for a struggling family.

This tragic event sparked a discussion about the impact of poverty on young people in Kashmir, highlighting the need for greater support for families struggling financially, especially in access to education.

Even though it’s been a few days since she returned to college, she’s desperately waiting for someone to pay her tuition.
