Legendary NFL coach Tony Dungy speaks out against legalizing abortion in Florida

Legendary NFL coach Tony Dungy speaks out against legalizing abortion in Florida

Former NFL coach, Super Bowl winner Tony Dungy spoke at a press conference with Florida Governor Ron Desantis on Tuesday and encouraged Floridians to vote against an amendment that would legalize abortion in the state.

Dungy spoke at Clearwater Central Catholic High School and shared his family’s history and interactions with eight students adopted children influenced his position on this matter. He also cited his religion to justify his position.

“I happen to believe that these babies in the womb are life, and I know not everyone believes that, but I happen to believe. My Bible tells me that it is,” Dungy said. “My wife Lauren and I now have eight adopted children at home, and when I come home every day and look at these children, I don’t see eight choices. “I’m sorry, that’s eight lives and yes we have to protect our women and yes we have to protect our mothers, but we also have to protect these children.”

Dungy also said he disagreed with the claim that not having access to abortion would put women in Florida at risk.

“I get very upset when people say, ‘Oh, we have to pass this because women in Florida are in danger.’ No, they are not in danger when they are pregnant.” Dungy said. “We have some of the best health care in the world here, it is available and it will not be stopped if this amendment is not passed.”

Dungy previously spoke out against Vice President Harris for her stance on abortion in a post dated September 19. Dungy was responding to a quote from Harris who insisted that “you don’t have to abandon your faith” if you believe in legalizing abortion.

“Dear Vice President Harris: I hear this statement all the time. What exactly “faith” are you talking about when you say you don’t have to abandon it to support abortion? Are you talking about the Christian faith which says that all children are created in the image of God (Gen 1:26), that God places them in the womb (Jer 1:5) and that we should not take any life unjustly (Luke 18:20) ?” Dungy wrote.

“Are you talking about this faith, or some vague, general “faith” that says we are good and wise enough to make our own decisions? What “faith” are you talking about?”

Dungy also previously tweeted former NFL player Benjamin Watson into Harris’ Sept. 17 tweet, which said: “A young mother from Georgia should be alive today, raising her son and pursuing her dream of attending nursing school. This is exactly what we feared when Roe vs. was lost. Wade. In more than 20 states, Trump’s abortion bans prevent doctors from providing basic medical care.”

“Amber Thurman’s tragic death was caused by complications related to legal abortion drugs and gross medical malpractice,” Watson responded. “She should have been attended to immediately by doctors who instead waited too long to take action. Georgia’s pro-life law is not the problem. It does not criminalize performing a D&C, especially when a fetal heartbeat cannot be detected.

“Amber should live and (Harris) should focus her attention on these facts so that we can prevent another tragedy rather than promoting politically motivated lies.”

On Dungy’s tweet, one commenter wrote: “I love what you stand for as a coach. But how do you support someone like Trump? I never saw your post criticizing him.”

“I guess you didn’t see my post last week when I said Donald Trump couldn’t read Florida Amendment 4 carefully when he said he would vote yes on it,” Dungy replied.
