Former CEOs of American, Amex, LinkedIn and others endorse Kamala Harris

  • A group of former CEOs published an article on Tuesday supporting the decision Kamala Harris for the president.
  • They wrote that Donald Trump will be bad for business and bad for the American economy.
  • This comes as Trump touts support from Elon Musk and leaders in finance and other industries.

A group of former CEOs who led major U.S. companies – including American Airlines, LinkedIn, Xerox and American Express – made the case for Kamala Harris in an op-ed a week earlier Election day.

17 business leaders said they were voting for Harris because they believed she would be better for the economy than the previous one President Donald Trump. They presented their case Fortune on Tuesday.

This group included the former CEO of LinkedIn Reid Hoffmanformer American Airlines CEO Doug Parker, former American Express CEO Ken Chenault, former Sony CEO and current Snap CEO Michael Lynton, and others who have led large publicly traded companies.

“Many Americans still believe that the CEOs of the nation’s largest companies are largely supporters of Donald Trump, but nothing could be further from the truth,” they wrote.

The group said current CEOs may not be able to speak publicly due to potential consequences for their businesses. For this reason, they said they felt an obligation to speak out as former leaders who reach out to active CEOs.

They said Trump has taken “extremely anti-business” positions, including proposing “draconian” tariffs on imports. They also criticized Trump’s statement about eliminating Fed independence.

The group said they come from different political backgrounds but support Harris in part because of the state of the U.S. economy. They quoted GDP growthrecord stock market valuations, wage growth and employment levels, among others.

Op-ed comes later Elon Musk is increasingly involved in supporting Trump’s presidential candidacy. “I wasn’t politically active before; “I am politically active now because I believe that the future of America and the future of civilization are at stake,” he added. Musk said at the town hall hosted last Saturday in Swatara Township, Pennsylvania.

Other business leaders publicly supported Trumpincluding Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, who said this week that Trump would be “efficient and effective.”

Meanwhile, some business leaders avoid taking a public stance, even if they privately support one candidate or another.

Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a professor at the Yale School of Management and founder of the Chief Executive Leadership Institute who is listed as one of two non-CEO authors of Tuesday’s article, previously told Business Insider that most CEOs do not publicly endorse candidates because they “fear unnecessary alienation of customers and employees.”
