USPS is closing and removing trash bins at some Colorado Springs post offices

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — When you walk into the post office in Colorado Springs, you may notice something has changed.

“I go to the post office a lot and I don’t pay much attention to the trash cans,” said resident Marilyn Muth.

People using the post office at East Pikes Peak Avenue and South Nevada Avenue noticed that there were no trash cans inside. In fact, the closest publicly accessible facility is on the street corner.

“When I went to pick up my mail, I noticed there were no trash cans,” said resident Alfreda Jones. “We either trust the people who take care of our ballots or we don’t.”

A USPS spokesperson shared the following statement:

“This is a temporary precautionary measure taken at several local post offices to prevent counterfeiting of customer discarded election materials.”

Both the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder and the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) confirmed that there have been no documented incidents of potential tampering with rifles or absentee ballots.

But for people to receive mail, there has to be a reason for the move.

“Given the controversy that has arisen between the parties, there is a lot of unreasonable behavior, so maybe this is just another case,” said resident Kelly Sill.
