At least one serious injury among Bears offensive linemen

At least one serious injury among Bears offensive linemen

The Bears’ offensive Cinderella story ended this season on Tuesday when former practice squad offensive lineman Bill Murray went on injured reserve following a chest injury suffered in Sunday’s game.

Murray is a former college defensive lineman who transitioned to the offensive line. He played for the Patriots, was released, joined the Bears practice squad and played well enough in training camp to be named to the Bears’ 53-man roster this year as a reserve linebacker.

Murray came on after Teven Jenkins was injured in Sunday’s game and then suffered an injury himself.

The Bears have a few options, such as re-using Nate Davis on the right wing or activating Ryan Bates from injured reserve.

Injuries hit their offensive line hard on Sunday, and more will be known about the severity of Jenkins and Braxton Jones’ knee injuries. Newcomer Kiran Amegadjie had his first opportunity to play wide and struggled at times.

If they need another offensive lineman, Larry Borom could come off injured reserve this week.

Unlike previous seasons, the offensive line remained relatively intact. The team has rotated its lineup on average every other week in 2022 and 2023, but has only changed its lineup once so far, when Matt Pryor took over as Davis’ right guard in Week 3.

After signing Austen Pleasants on Tuesday, the Bears added offensive lineman to the practice squad and released long tackle Jake McQuaide from the practice squad. Pleasants was on the Bears practice squad in 2023.

Pleasants is a 6-foot-7, 330-pound tackle and defender. He played in one game for Carolina in 2021 and one game for the Chargers in 2023.

.

Pleasants was released two weeks ago by this week’s Bears opponent, the Cardinals. He was with many other teams on training squads or in training camps. He was also with the Cardinals this year, as well as the Chargers, Panthers and Jaguars.
