Milwaukee street racing escape; A Bay View bartender continues treatment

Slowly but surely, loved ones say Cara Corder is recovering after she was hit by street racing suspects over the weekend.

A 33-year-old beloved Bay View bartender was seriously injured in a hit-and-run. Investigators say two cars were involved in a street race early Saturday morning near Kinnickinnic and Rusk as Corder was crossing the street.

Multiple surveillance cameras record vehicles leaving the scene in both lanes.

Officers say they have found one of the cars involved in the incident, but the drivers are still running away.

Asher Gray is a longtime friend of mine. A started GoFundMe to help her recover.

“We’re hopeful that she’s kind of made it through the worst of it and will be able to make a full recovery,” Gray said. “You hit the person and you just drive away. That means it’s unwise.”

Police also confirmed that before the two cars came down the street, one of the cars had been stolen just before the crash.

“I feel so sorry for the community,” Gray said. “I think Milwaukeeans are better than that. It just shows a disregard for human life.”

“It seems like every day we’re getting some signs,” Gray said. “Doctors say it’s unbelievable that she was able to move her broken arm as soon as she arrived at the hospital.”

He said Corder also has brain damage and any donations would help.

“We have about $88,000, which is unbelievable,” he said. “It just shows what an amazing person she is and how many lives she touched.

Donors included rock star Jack White of the White Stripes, who donated $15,000. The musician is friends with Corder’s boss.

The support for her family has been overwhelming.

“Her mom says every day, ‘I’m going to cry, this is amazing,'” Gray said.
