Waynesboro students participate in a distracted driving simulator

WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) – Waynesboro drivers school students had first-hand experience of how distracted driving can cause problems on the road.

Students were asked to drive a golf cart through an obstacle course, dealing with distractions such as loud music and talking to demonstrate how they can affect concentration. This is the first year Waynesboro High School has tried this program.

“I heard about this project from a friend who runs the YOVASO club at another high school. I wanted to make sure everyone in our school had a chance to do this too,” said Waynesboro High School teacher Mickie Holbert.

Youth of Virginia Speak out about Traffic Safety, or YOVASO, is a student-run organization that allows students to take a leadership role in teaching their peers and community about safe driving.

Holbert said that we live in a world where everyone is constantly distracted.

“I tell my students all the time that you can’t rely on other people on the road to keep you safe, but you can rely on yourself to be the safest driver in the world,” Holbert said.

Holbert said he felt the simulation served its purpose for the students.

“It’s always fun to see people get behind the wheel and try it, and those who sit in a classroom all day and do their job. It’s exciting to see them get out and try it for themselves,” Holbert said.

One of the students who took part said it was an unforgettable experience.

“He kind of gave me a hard time, but it was fun. He was just asking a lot of questions and trying to distract me,” said student Briscoe Miller.

Miller said that although he is not yet a driver, he believes this experience will help him when he eventually gets behind the wheel.
