PHILLIPS, Maine (WABI) – A man is dead after an officer shot him Tuesday night in Phillips.

Franklin County dispatchers received calls around 6 p.m. regarding a man who was standing on the bridge with a gun and was suicidal.

When police responded they found 61-year-old Lawrence Scott on the side of the Salem Road bridge.

The deputy attempted to talk to Scott about seeking help and repeatedly asked him to drop the gun, but Scott reportedly refused.

Officials say Scott then raised the gun at the deputy. The deputy then shot him.

First aid was administered, but Scott did not survive.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Jesse Clement is currently on administrative leave, per standard protocol.

The case is being investigated by the Office of the Prosecutor General.
