The army detained Jubo Dal leader Jahangir Alam Julhas (40) in Lalmonirhat on charges of creating chaos while bidding for Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.

Today at noon he was detained on the hospital premises after he was identified on the basis of CCTV footage. He was later handed over to the police.

Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station Commander Abdul Quader confirmed the incident to The Daily Star.

Jahangir is a resident of Tumolpara area of Lalmonirhat town. He serves as the senior vice-president of the Lalmonirhat Jubo Dal district.

According to police, doctors and eyewitnesses, tenders were invited in three categories for the supply of food, stationery and linen to patients at the 250-bed Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital. Today, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., a tender box was set up in front of the hospital director’s office. Jahangir and some of his associates placed guards around the tender box, preventing other contractors from bidding. The Jubo Dal leader and his men misbehaved with hospital doctors who were protesting against him.

Army personnel responded quickly after receiving a call from the doctor on duty. They identified the Jubo Dal leader from hospital surveillance footage and then detained him.

Lalmonirhat Hospital Superintendent Sadar Abdul Mokaddem said that out of 23 food supply schedules, 10 were submitted, seven out of 24 stationery supply schedules and seven out of 18 linen supply schedules were submitted.

“The detained Jubo Dal leader behaved very badly towards the hospital doctors. If the soldiers had not arrived on time, other contractors would not have been able to submit bids, he said.

Lalmonirhat Jubo Dal district president Anisur Rahman Anis said Jahangir Alam did not stop any contractor from bidding and suggested that the army detained him because of an altercation with a doctor.

OC Abdul Quader confirmed that the detained Jubo Dal leader was brought to the police station and legal action would be taken against him.
