Sarasota police release body camera footage showing officer-child crash

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche provided an update on the tragic accident that occurred Monday evening around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 23rd Street and Maple Avenue, which involved a Sarasota Police officer and the driver of an 8- one-year-old child.

Sarasota Police Department shared the video Wednesday from both the officer’s body-worn camera and the dash cam of another officer at the scene. Police warn Viewer discretion is advised as the recording may be difficult to view or listen to.

According to department officials, the child was riding a motorcycle when the officer left the scene on another call. They say the officer then hit the child.

An 8-year-old boy was transported by helicopter to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. The child has been in hospital since Wednesday.

The officer was unharmed and was placed on administrative duties.

This remains an active investigation. The Florida Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation.
