BCA: Officers identified in St. Patrick’s Day incident Paul involving a multiple shooting suspect

The services identified the officers of St. Paul involved in Monday’s shooting involving a man accused in multiple recent incidents.

How previously reportedOfficers were called to the intersection of Snelling and University Avenue West around 7:45 p.m. on a report of shots fired. There, law enforcement found a suspect armed with a handgun, and police began negotiations with him.

Bennett did not put down his gun or surrender and continued south until he reached the intersection of University and Snelling avenues.

Police in St. Paul claims that’s when Bennett pointed a gun at his own head and walked in the middle of the lanes and in the middle between vehicles on Snelling Avenue before stopping on the light rail tracks.

That’s where police say they used less-lethal rounds to force Bennett to put down his gun, and he pointed the gun at officers, causing them to fire and hit him.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) states that the following officers were involved:

  • Austin Borowicz, who had three years of law enforcement experience, fired 40mm less-lethal rounds.
  • Shawn Marlowe, who had 10 years of law enforcement experience, fired his rifle.
  • Chase Robinson, who had 10 years of law enforcement experience, fired his gun.
  • Sgt. Lamichael Shead, who had eight years of law enforcement experience, fired his gun.
  • Blake Steffen, who had four years of law enforcement experience, fired his rifle.
  • Peov Suon, who had three years of law enforcement experience, fired less-lethal 40 mm bullets.

According to the BCA, all officers are on leave due to serious incidents.

The shooting suspect was identified Tuesday as 40-year-old Earl Bennett.

On Tuesday in Ramsey County, Bennett was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and one count of second-degree assault in connection with the officer-involved shooting.

On Tuesday, Bennett was also charged in Hennepin County.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said Tuesday afternoon that Bennett was wanted on Sunday, a triple shooting at a homeless encampment which resulted in the death of two men and a woman with life-threatening injuries. O’Hara also said Bennett was a suspect Monday’s shooting in Minneapolis which resulted in one man suffering potentially life-threatening injuries.

In Monday’s shooting, Bennett was charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Bennett remains hospitalized at Regions Hospital in critical but stable condition. A BCA investigation into the incident is ongoing.
