UCLA offensive line must speak against Nebraska – Daily News

LOS ANGELES — For the University of California, Los Angeles football team to be successful in Saturday’s game against Nebraska, communication will be key.

And while it’s important for the entire team to be in good shape, there’s no group more critical to communication than the offensive line.

The offensive line has shown steady improvement as the season has progressed and has formed the most consistent group of five players over the last few games.

Garrett DiGiorgio and Nikki Prongos started at tackle, Spencer Holstege and Josh Carlin started at defense, and Sam Yoon took over at center.

“Continuity is great,” Yoon said after Wednesday’s practice. “Coach (DeShaun) Foster always says, ‘Do more, do more.’ That’s why we put in a lot of extra work. I think that really helps us shine now.”

The starting five will have a tough challenge against the Nebraska defense.

The Cornhuskers rank 11th nationally in total yards per game (302) and fifth in rushing yards per game (92.1).

Nebraska was fourth in Ohio State with 285 yards, almost 200 yards shy of its season average of 472, in last week’s 21-17 loss to the Buckeyes.

Foster said Wednesday that the Nebraska forward likes to mix things up, reiterating that the Bruins offensive line needs to constantly be talking to maintain blocks.

“You know they’re just identifying and diagnosing and knowing exactly who’s blocking who, so that’s the most important key to communication,” Foster said. “And when you have the talent to do it too, that’s a big thing. They have two really good D-attacks… some experienced linebackers, so for the most part it will be good if we can communicate.

For Yoon, Carlin’s presence on his right gave the sophomore an advantage, especially in away games.

Carlin, who started the season in center field, still does most of his calling on the line. He is adept at silent counts in hostile road conditions like the one UCLA will face in Lincoln.

“He is an incredible source of knowledge, especially considering the silent count is on his way,” Yoon said. “We talk about the line of scrimmage. He makes a lot of calls and having him next to me has been an incredible support.

Thanks to the cohesion of this particular group, quarterback Ethan Garbers was able to set career highs in targets, passing yards, touchdowns and completion percentage. UCLA won 35-32 over Rutgers October 19.
