Why did Agatha kill witches? The reason is simpler than you think

Why did Agatha kill witches? The reason is simpler than you think

Agatha All Along Episode 9 goes back in time, revealing the tragic (and villainous) history of the titular witch – and if you think she killed witches for a noble cause, that’s not the case.

Agatha Harkness’s powers are extraordinary, but one is particularly dangerous: if the witch attacks her, she can steal their powers and drain them until they die. We saw this in episode 5 when Alice Wu-Gulliver tried to save Agatha from her mother – and she killed Alice in return.

However, no matter how uncontrollable and unquenchable her hunger seemed, she Power stay. In Agata all the way in the finale, Billy (aka Wiccan) gives her some of his power and says, “Don’t take it all” – and she agrees.

So if she didn’t have to drain all their power, why did Agatha kill all those witches? Well, I hate to say it, but it really is that simple: she is not (or at least wasn’t) a good person.

Agatha killed witches… because she wanted to

By the end, Agatha All Along is more… Admire antihero than villain. He sacrifices himself to Death to save Billy, who is allowed to live despite “stealing his second life” in Rio’s eyes. That doesn’t mean she always had a good reason to murder witches – she just wanted their power, that’s all.

Remember in WandaVision when he tells Wanda, “I’m taking power away from those who don’t deserve it, it’s kind of my thing.”

The finale of Agatha All Along makes this all too clear. It opens in 1750, when Agatha is pregnant and ready to give birth. It is implied that her baby is dying in the womb, but she pleads Death (Rio Vidal, Original Green Witch) let him live, so he offers her an indefinite time.

As long as her son, Nicholas Scratch, lives, she wanders from coven to coven, stealing their powers and killing them all. As Nicholas grows up, he trains him how to trick witches and lure them into his traps.

Two things can be true: she wants to be as strong as possible to survive and take care of her son, and she is power-hungry and out of control.

However, when Nicky’s time comes to an end, he fills the void by killing even more witches, suppressing his sadness with the power.

Agatha could kill witches for Rio, or Death

Agatha and Rio’s relationship is still not entirely clear, but their romance may have ended in a deal: Agatha could receive immortality in exchange for killing witches.

Let’s look at the evidence: Agatha has been around for hundreds of years, and while witches seem to live longer than regular humans, they cannot survive This long.

At the beginning of the series, Agatha told Rio, “You can’t kill me, it’s not allowed.” Is it possible that killing Agatha will violate their agreement? When witches take this long to die, they effectively avoid Death – or as she puts it, natural balance, so Agatha simply sped up the process and allowed her to collect more bodies.

Death also hinted that this might be true in the penultimate episode, telling Agatha, “No one in history has been treated like you.”

“You call what you did special treatment? You didn’t give me anything, you took,” Agatha says, suggesting that her ability to outlive everyone she ever cared about has left her cold and unsympathetic; Is it worth living forever if you have no one to enjoy it with?
