A South African footballer surrendered to police after a fatal accident

Local police say a South African footballer will face charges of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving after he allegedly fled the scene of a fatal car crash that killed a young girl.

On Wednesday morning, 29-year-old Sekhukhune United player Shaun Mogaila allegedly crashed his BMW into a car containing an adult woman and two children in Gauteng province.

A police spokesman told local news site IOL that the nine-year-old “was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Mr Mogaila turned himself in at Rabie Ridge Police Station a few hours after the accident.

The athlete was scheduled to appear before a magistrate’s court, but there was a delay, a spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) told the news site. Sowetan live.

The woman and the 13-year-old are currently in hospital.

Sekhukhune United has not yet commented on the incident.

Video of the accident captured on a dash cam went viral on social media, with many people expressing outrage.

“This is what scares me about driving right now – the fact that I can get in my car and drive safely with my family and still die,” said one X user.

Some, however, defended the footballer and praised him for turning himself in to the police.

“You guys who are busy condemning Shaune Mogaila, let’s hope you don’t have cars, you have no idea what’s going on, as soon as you cause an accident, no one even gets hurt, the poor guy turned himself in later when he regained his senses,” said another user X

A few hours before the accident, the player was taking part in a match against Richards Bay at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.
