Woman seriously injured by electric scooter in Cold Lake

A woman was airlifted to an Edmonton hospital after she was hit by an electric scooter in Cold Lake earlier this week.

On Monday at approximately 11:15 a.m., the city issued a public safety advisory urging residents to avoid the area between 75 Avenue and 69 Avenue (Museum Way) while emergency responders worked in the area.

The incident occurred around 8:00. The ambulance service was the first to respond, and the police were notified shortly thereafter.

The trail reopened around 5 p.m. that evening and RCMP continued to investigate the collision.

“Someone was on the trail and was hit by an electric scooter,” said Cst. Cory Riggs, public information officer for the Alberta RCMP, talks to Lakeland this week. He added that the woman was taken by ambulance to hospital and then flown by STARS Air Ambulance to Edmonton for treatment.

The electric vehicle involved in the incident is suspected to be a GIO model. “I can’t say with 100% certainty that it was one of the GIO scooters, but we believe that’s what it may have been,” Riggs said.

The 40-year-old man driving the scooter remained at the scene and provided assistance to the rescue services. RCMP are investigating whether criminal charges may be filed.

“(He) remained at the scene and then assisted the emergency services. We are investigating whether this is a criminal case, but at this point the investigation has not reached that point so we have no idea if charges will be filed,” Riggs said.

Future updates may be released depending on whether charges are incurred. The investigation remains ongoing and the RCMP are investigating the incident to determine further action.
