Helen Mirren is sad that Kurt Cobain never used GPS

Helena Mirren regrets the fact that the late Kurt Cobain he never had the opportunity to experience the wonders of technology, specifically GPS, before his death.

“I always say it’s very sad that Kurt Cobain died then because he never saw GPS,” Mirren, 79, said on Thursday’s episode of “October 24” Evening standard‘S Brave New World Podcast.. “GPS is the greatest thing, being able to watch my little blue speck walking down the street. I find it completely magical and unbelievable.”

While sharing her thoughts on aging, the actress apparently used Cobain, who died by suicide in 1994 at the age of 27, as shorthand for dying young.

“If you’re lucky, you’ll be older,” Mirren said on the podcast. “And here you are. Oh my God, I’m 79 years old! I never thought I would be 79 years old. And then you say, OK, that’s it. That’s what 79 is. And it’s quite OK. It’s not brilliant, but it wasn’t that brilliant to be 25 either.

This isn’t the first time White Bird the actress became honest about growing up.

“I say celebrate it, don’t fight it. You either die young or you get old, and I don’t want to die young,” she said HI! Warehouse in October 2023 “I am too interested in life. It’s great, so celebrate it and enjoy it.”

Mirren added that she wanted to celebrate her age rather than oppose the concept of aging and trying to cling to youth.

“I always said I’m not getting old, I’m growing up. “I feel my age in the fullest possible sense of the word, with all the curiosity, knowledge and fear I have towards life,” she said. “I like being the age I am. Why would I want to be someone else? I don’t.”

Mirren continued: “We absolutely need to change our approach to aging. Part of life is aging, so vocabulary is extremely important. Without a doubt, as you get older, your self-confidence grows.”

Meanwhile, in April this year, Kurt’s daughter, Frances BeanCobainmarked 30th anniversary of my father’s death. Frances, now 32, was just 20 months old when she lost her dad.

Sharing a touching post on Instagram, Frances reflects on her painful loss.

“30 years ago my dad’s life ended,” Frances wrote under a carousel of photos, including two of the Nirvana frontman holding her as a child. “The second and third photos are of the last time we were together, when he was still alive.”

Frances explained that her “ideas about loss have been in constant metamorphosis” over the past thirty years since the musician died.

“The greatest lesson I have learned from grief for almost as long as I have been conscious is that it serves a purpose,” she wrote. “The duality of life and death, pain and joy, yin and yang must exist side by side, otherwise none of it would have any meaning. It is the impermanence of human existence that throws us into the abyss of our most authentic lives. As it turns out, there is no greater motivation to lean into loving awareness than knowing that everything ends.
