Eight people have died as police report a helicopter crash in Port Harcourt

There was a tragic helicopter crash on… PortHarcourtRivers State, on Thursday, October 24, 2024. A Sikorsky SK76 helicopter, registration 5NBQG, operated by East Wind Aviation, was flying to the FPSO-NUIMS ANTAN oil platform.

The plane took off from the Port Harcourt military base at 11:22 a.m. but unfortunately crashed into the waters near Bonny Finima in the Atlantic Ocean. There were eight passengers on board, including two crew members and six oil workers.

Helicopter crash: three people confirmed dead

Initially, three people were confirmed dead, but approx State of Rivers Police command have since said all eight passengers are feared dead. He added that a rescue operation had been launched and President Bola Tinubu ordered an intensified search and ordered the military to join the operation.

TV channels said the state police command says it is working with other agencies to recover the plane and its passengers. Dear Minister of Aviation and Space Development, Festus Keyamoconfirmed the event.

Helicopter crash: police connect with victims’ families

The Rivers State Police Command has expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. The National Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) conducted an investigation into the accident to determine its cause.

The police statement reads in part:

“Unfortunately, the helicopter was reported to have fallen into the ocean near the Mimbo platform and FPSO of Antan Producing Limited at around 11 am. All eight people on board are feared dead.

“The Maritime Division of the Rivers State Police Command is working with other agencies to recover the aircraft and passengers.”
