Highway ambush: clash over prisoner transport in Islamabad

On Friday, in a dramatic attack on the outskirts of Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, gunmen attacked vans carrying prisoners, injuring four policemen. The attack took place at the Sangjani toll plaza, where three vans carrying 82 prisoners were ambushed.

The incident occurred when prisoners, previously involved in a protest led by the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, were being shifted to Attock Jail. About 20 attackers in four vehicles attacked the convoy. Four perpetrators were arrested, others reportedly fled.

This ambush triggered a storm of allegations between the government and PTI. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar accused the PTI of organizing the attack, while PTI leader Sheikh Waqqas Akram accused police involvement. There is tension in the district as the investigation continues.
