Shiv Sena (UBT) Aaditya Thackeray Mother-son duo booked hanging dog death

Pune Rural Police on Thursday arrested a mother and son for allegedly killing a dog by hanging it from a tree. The alleged incident took place in Pirangut area of Mulshi Tehsil in Pune. A case was registered against Prabhavati Jagtap and her son Omkar Jagtap, who had a dog with them for 8 years.

The incident gained popularity after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray mentioned the incident on X (formerly Twitter). “I just came across a very, very heartbreaking image of a dog being hanged to death by the owner’s family in Pune. I am shocked beyond words that people can behave like this. Apart from elections and other stresses of duty, I appeal to @PuneCityPolice to take stringent action against the culprits. It’s inhumane. Pets are family too,” wrote Aaditya Thackeray.

According to a PTI report, Paud Road senior police inspector Santosh Girigosavi said that the incident took place on October 22 when Prabhavati allegedly attacked their Labrador with a stick. Her son Omkar then hanged the dog from a tree. Girigosavi said they were booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The complaint was filed by Padmini Stump, an animal activist who runs the Mission Could foundation, which runs a dog shelter.

According to PTI, Stump said that initially the family called a dog lover from Pimpri and asked her to come and pick up the dog. However, the duo later uploaded photos of the dog hanging from a tree. Stump said she and those with her rushed to report the crime against them.

Talking to ANI, she said that ten minutes after asking for time to make arrangements, they received an SMS from Omkar Jagtap asking them not to send anyone along with a photo of a live dog and a video of the dog being hanged. After filing the FIR, Stump brought the dog in her car to Pune City for post-mortem.

When asked why the family decided to kill the dog, one of the reasons he cited was that the veterinarian suggested a rabies test. “Assuming the animal had rabies, they could have killed it,” she added. Meanwhile, an autopsy showed the dog had been “mercilessly” beaten and hanged, Stump said.
