‘Persons of interest’ identified by police investigating Kyran Durnin’s disappearance, presumed to be murder – The Irish Times.

Guard have identified key suspects as part of an investigation into a disappearance, presumed homicide Kirana Durnin (8), but will not take action to arrest them unless they manage to secure evidence to support the arrests.

Detectives believe that a number of people they have spoken to in detail have more information about Kyran and what happened to him, but have not yet shared with gardaí. However, while arrests are expected in due course, sources said Gardaí need to have very specific evidence in this case to present to suspects, adding that the investigation has not yet reached that stage.

Gardaí are working to trace the movements of people under investigation, the level and nature of contact they have with each other, as well as their use of mobile phones and where they live and have traveled in recent years.

Search of the house in Dundalk, What LouthExcavations in the back garden and nearby plot were completed this week and gardaí found no evidence that the boy’s remains could have been hidden there. This house on Emer Terrace was the home of the Durnin family until May, and police have been speaking to locals to try to establish if they had ever seen or spoken to Kyran and when.

A second property, also in Co Louth, is under review with the possibility of an extensive search, but no action has been taken yet.

Garda sources said that since it emerged last week that an appeal into the disappearance of Kyran and his mother, Dayla (24), had been rejected and a murder investigation had been opened in connection with the boy’s alleged murder.

Some of the information received includes possible sightings of the boy much later than the last confirmed sighting of Kyran at his national school in Dundalk in around May-June 2022. However, Garda sources have highlighted all leads received from members of the force. public opinion would need to be checked to determine their usefulness and accuracy.

Gardaí turned the case into a murder investigation after the early stages of the investigation failed to find any evidence that Kyran was alive. A family member reported the child and his mother missing in late August and a Garda investigation began immediately.

This report was made to gardaí the day after the Children and Family Services Agency, Tusłaexpressed its concerns for Kyran’s well-being.

However, gardaí found no evidence that he was still alive in August. There is concern that he may have died two years ago or earlier and that his absence somehow went unnoticed. Although the case is now a murder investigation, Gardaí have not ruled out that he died in another way and his remains were subsequently hidden. While Tusla worked with the Durnin family, Kyran was not in state care.
