An inmate at the Albemarle Correctional Facility died on Wednesday.
Curtis Levi Moore, 38, who had just started serving a sentence for drug trafficking, died at 3:32 a.m. at a local health care facility, according to Brad Deen, communications specialist for the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.
“State confidentiality laws regarding criminal records and federal HIPAA restrictions on protected health information limit what the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections can say about his death,” Deen said. “Local law enforcement and the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conduct the investigation that is required by state law when a person dies in custody. “OCME will determine the cause of death and a final report, including any relevant toxicology results, will be available in the public record.”
Deen said the Department of Adult Corrections is also investigating what happened. He said that around 8 p.m. on Oct. 19, Moore was taken to a local health facility for treatment. He returned to ACI around 2 a.m. on October 20.
Deen said emergency services were called around 4 p.m. on Oct. 20 for an unrelated medical issue.
“He was transported again to a local health facility and admitted. He was pronounced dead at 3:32 a.m. on Wednesday,” Deen said.
In July, Moore was convicted of drug trafficking in Columbus County. Its expected release date is 2032.
Moore was previously convicted in Bladen and Columbus counties of attempted first-degree murder, criminal possession of a firearm, receiving stolen goods, possession of drug paraphernalia and other charges.
The Stanley News & Press has reached out to Moore’s family for comment.
