Second teenager charged in connection with Rotella Park shooting | Crime and justice

A week after a boy under 13 was charged with first-degree murder, a second minor has been charged.

The first juvenile was formally charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, possession of a weapon by a minor and enhanced sentencing on October 18 in connection with the October 12 murder of a 15-year-old boy in Rotelli Park. It is located near the apartment complexes in the Welby/Coronado neighborhood, south of Thornton.

Now, thanks to new evidence, the original charges against the boy have been dropped, reducing his charges to just one count of possession of a firearm by a minor, according to a press release from the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The second boy was formally charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and other charges related to the shooting.

The shooting took place on October 12 around 11:30 p.m., Saturday evening.

Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies found two juveniles with gunshot wounds in the park. One of the minors, a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the neck, was pronounced dead despite rescue efforts.

Investigators determined that a group of up to seven boys were at the park when another teenager pulled out a gun and shot two victims, a sheriff’s office spokesman told The Denver Gazette on Sunday.

The first boy was arrested on October 16 on murder charges, but, as noted, new evidence pointed to a second suspect as the shooter.

The first boy will not be tried as an adult due to his age and charges. The district attorney’s office charged the second suspect with murder in juvenile court and has not yet decided whether to send the case to adult court, according to a district attorney’s spokesman.
