The son of an injured border crossing guard talks about his mother’s condition and the road to recovery

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Jimmy Perdue greatly appreciates the support his family has received over the past week.

“I can’t even express it, you’re so overwhelmed,” he said. “I mean, I’m getting goosebumps right now just thinking about the support and love everyone is showing.”

Last Friday morning, his mother, Terri Perdue, was hit by a car while serving as a crossing guard in front of West Madison Pre-K.

He has been in hospital since then, in critical condition, with several serious injuries.

“She has a long road to recovery ahead of her, her pelvis is broken in three places, there was a brain hemorrhage that stopped quite early, we still don’t know exactly what it will be like yet,” he said. “She had a broken left arm that ultimately needed to be replaced. She also had a broken arm, so some equipment had to be put into it.”

Over the course of the week, Jimmy said he saw an outpouring of public support.

His co-worker led the way with a donation fund that has now topped more than $13,000.

Jimmy said there was a lot of uncertainty at the start of the race, which made him anxious about what might happen next.

But he said the support he received from the Madison community was instrumental in helping him get through what was probably the worst week of his life.

“Knowing that she was loved by so many people and being uplifted during this time, everyone really quickly rallied around wanting to help through this whole ordeal. “It’s not something you usually see,” he said. “It was truly a blessing and I told people, ‘Leave it to God to use my mom to unite the city like this.’”

Meanwhile, Madison police confirm the driver who hit Perdue remained on scene after the incident, but no charges have been filed at this time.
