DeKalb, Illinois shooting: Rockford man shot by police after hostage standoff, identified as Abram Perez, county coroner says

DEKALB COUNTY, Ill. (WLS) — Man died in police shooting during a hostage standoff in DeKalb earlier this week he was identified.

On Friday, the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office identified the man shot and killed by police Tuesday night as Abram Perez, 42, of Rockford.

The coroner’s office said the cause of death is pending autopsy and toxicology results

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle believed to be involved in a shooting in Rockford on Tuesday at approximately 11:03 p.m.

The vehicle was later spotted on traffic cameras at Peace Road and Mercantile Drive, and police later found the vehicle pulling up to the address where it was registered in DeKalb.

The sheriff’s office said a sheriff’s deputy tried to stop the vehicle, but it refused to stop and drove away.

Deputies pursued the vehicle, using stop sticks to deflate the tires. He stopped on Rich Road west of Nelson Road.

The sheriff’s office said Perez, the suspect, was armed with a handgun and there was a hostage in the car.

The sheriff’s office said the DeKalb County Special Operations Team, which includes hostage negotiators, was activated.

The sheriff’s office said the hostage was released after several hours of negotiations.

Negotiations continued with Perez to induce him to surrender.

Eventually, Perez allegedly pointed the gun at police and fired; Police returned fire, killing him, the sheriff’s office said.

Rockford police have not confirmed any information about the initial suspected shooting that started the chain of events.

Illinois State Police are investigating.
