A man accused of murdering his mother after her body was found in a rural caravan park has been pictured for the first time.

Callan Davidson (29) was charged with murder on Friday after emergency services were called to a property on Henry Street in Gunnedah, north-central New South Wales, at around 8.20am.

Police found his mother, Cheryl Davidson, believed to be in her 50s, seriously injured in a nearby tent, who later died at the scene.

Officers also found a man allegedly covered in blood.

Davidson, whose address is listed as Gunnedah Tourist Caravan Park, was later arrested before being taken to Gunnedah Police Station.

He refused to appear in Parramatta District Court on Saturday and his case was adjourned for hearing in Tamworth District Court on Monday.

It is understood that the court order was made to advise NSW Justice Health that Davidson should undergo a mental health assessment, Daily Telegraph reports.

Police established a crime scene yesterday morning and a knife was found nearby before it was confiscated. A forensic examination of the crime scene will be carried out.

Earlier, New South Wales Police Chief Inspector Michael Wurth described the scene as “traumatic”.

Chief Inspector Wurth said officers felt a sense of urgency when they saw the man allegedly covered in blood.

He also revealed that the pair are local residents of Gunnedah.

“We believe the man was at the campsite for approximately two weeks, but the other person… lives in a separate home.”

A report will be prepared for the Coroner’s information.
