BJP worker killed in encounter during rally, CM Himanta claims he ‘attacked and killed INC goons’

Assam Bypolls: Bharatiya Janata Party leaders said on Saturday that a party worker, who was allegedly injured in pre-poll violence in Assam’s Nagaon district, died on Friday (October 25). Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared that he was “killed by INC goons” and slammed the grand old party for “organizing poll violence and undermining democracy”.

The deceased Bipul Saikia was allegedly injured during a rally in Kawoimari area of Samaguri district on Thursday during a clash between BJP and Congress workers. Police reported that several other people, including journalists, were injured in the incident. While police did not confirm whether the BJP worker died of injuries sustained in the voting violence, they said a death report had been received, news agency PTI reported.

Additional SP (headquarters) Arup Jyoti Kalita said, “We have come to know about the death, but we have not received any complaint about the possible cause of death.”

CM Sarma expressed his condolences over the incident, saying, “I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family of our BJP Assam karyakarta from Samaguri, Late Bipul Saikia, who was brutally attacked and killed by INC goons. Those responsible will be held accountable.”

“This crime is a grim reminder of congressional fraud. Those who chant “Samvidhan Bachao” are the very ones who are organizing electoral violence and undermining democracy. The sacrifice of our karyakartas will not be in vain,” he said in a post on X. .

Confirming Saikia’s death, Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah expressed sadness over the loss of the dedicated party worker who, according to him, was attacked by Congress supporters. He accused the grand old party, especially its leader Rakibul Hussain, of inciting violence during the rally. Hussain’s son Tanzil is the opposition candidate.

Hussain is a former state cabinet minister who has represented Samaguri for 23 years. He vacated the seat after he won from Dhubri in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year.

BJP candidate for Samaguri constituency Diplu Ranjan Sharma has expressed condolences to Saikia’s family, assuring that his death will not be in vain. He also assured them that the people of the constituency would seek justice for Saikia by casting votes in favor of the BJP.

A police official told PTI that Hussain had lodged a complaint with the Samaguri police station alleging that the BJP workers had attacked the rally. A separate complaint was also filed by members of the saffron party, accusing them of assault by Congress supporters. Local journalists recorded two other complaints.

Meanwhile, the Samaguri BJP candidate filed his nomination papers in the presence of several senior members of the BJP and leaders of its ally AGP, including Baruah, state BJP chief Bhabesh Kalita and cabinet ministers Pijush Hazarika and Keshab Mahanta.
