A Labor MP turned himself in to police after an alleged assault.

Mike Amesbury, MP for Runcorn and Helsby, was filmed confronting a man lying on the pavement in Frodsham, Cheshire, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

In the video that circulated on social media, Amesbury appeared to tell the man: “You’re never going to threaten me again, are you?”

The video did not capture the alleged assault or the circumstances leading up to it.

In a statement, Mr Amesbury said: “Last night I was involved in an incident which occurred after I felt threatened in the street after a night out with friends.

“I contacted Cheshire Police myself this morning to report what happened during this incident.

“I will not be making any further public comment but will of course cooperate with any inquiries where required by Cheshire Police.

“I remain fully committed to working hard on behalf of the people of Runcorn and Helsby and I am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

– You will never threaten an MP again, will you?

A spokesman for Cheshire Police confirmed the incident had been reported.

One witness told an MP: “Leave it,” before another was heard saying: “The MP with gobs—–.”

Another observer then said: “He’s the local Member of Parliament,” to which Mr Amesbury replied: “Yes, I am. And you will never threaten me again.

He added: “Come and threaten an MP, you’ll never do that again, will you? You will never threaten an MP again, will you? You soft fucking boy.

Amesbury was first elected in 2017 and previously served in the shadow cabinets of Jeremy Corbyn and Sir Keir Starmer.

After Labor’s victory in the July general election, he was not given a ministerial role.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “At 2.48am on Saturday, October 26, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham.

“Caller reported being attacked by a male on Main Street. Investigations are ongoing.”

A Labor Party spokesman said: “We are aware of the incident that took place last night. We understand that Mike Amesbury MP has approached Cheshire Police to personally report what happened this morning and that he will co-operate with any inquiries.”

Labor did not suspend Mr Amesbury over this incident.

Mr Amesbury has been contacted for comment.
