Seneca Polytechnic will temporarily close its Markham campus

Seneca Polytechnic says it is temporarily closing one of its campuses north of Toronto due to the federal government’s recent cut in international student permits.

The university says it expects the cuts to result in a decline in student enrollment, requiring the closure of its campus in Markham, Ont.

The temporary closure will begin at the end of the fall 2024 term.

Programs planned for the campus will move to Newnham and York schools in Toronto by the fall 2025 semester.

In January, Ottawa announced it would reduce the number of international study permits in 2024, but last month it reduced the number by another 10 per cent, eliminating 300,000 places for international students.

Canada plans to limit the number of international student permits to 437,000 in 2025 and 2026.
