A 46-year-old man has been arrested on sexual assault charges after a student was attacked at a U of Manitoba residence

A 46-year-old man has been arrested and charged with sexual assault after a female student was attacked while she slept in a residence hall at the University of Manitoba early Friday morning.

Winnipeg police said a man entered the Arthur V. Mauro residence on Dafoe Road on the U of M campus in south Winnipeg on Friday and then broke into the victim’s room at 4:45 a.m. while she was sleeping.

The woman fought the intruder when he entered her room and physically attacked her. According to the police on Friday afternoon, she suffered injuries and her condition is stable.

They published photos from security video showing the suspect in the attack and a description of the man.

Around 11 p.m. Friday, officers received a call from a person who spotted a man matching the description along the southbound lane of Pembina Highway, police said in a Saturday update.

They found him in the 1800 block of Pembina Highway, north of Abinoji Mikanah. He was arrested and handed over to the police sexual crimes unit.

They say they determined that 46-year-old Garry Junior Edwards entered the apartment building and broke into a secured area and then into the victim’s room.

Edwards faces a number of charges, including sexual assault, robbery and several burglaries, as well as attempting to overcome resistance by strangulation, strangulation or strangulation.
