A Winnipeg man charged after an attack on a University of Manitoba dorm room

Winnipeg police have arrested and charged a man in connection with an assault in a University of Manitoba dorm room.

Police tell CTV News officers responded to a “suspicious call” from a restaurant on the southbound lane of Pembina Highway on Friday around 11 p.m. The report came from a citizen who had read the previous recommendation and called the police about a man outside the restaurant who apparently matched the suspect’s description.

The suspect was arrested in the 1800 block of Pembina Highway.

Investigators said a man entered a dormitory building on Dafoe Road early Friday morning and then broke into a woman’s dorm room. It was there that the woman told police that the man had attacked her.

Garry Edwards Jr., 46, was charged with several felonies, including three counts of breaking and entering a dwelling with intent, sexual assault, robbery and overcoming resistance by attempting to strangle, strangle or suffocate another person.

Police also thanked the public, media and the University of Manitoba for their assistance in locating and identifying the suspect involved in the incident.

Edwards was taken into custody.

The University of Manitoba released a statement Saturday afternoon confirming the arrest. She also reiterated additional security measures that were put in place after the incident, including increased security presence and staff, as well as routine inspections of all entrances and exits to the residence.
