Former England manager Gareth Southgate is reportedly set to receive a knighthood for his historic career as manager of the Three Lions.

Southgate, who led England to two Euro finals and a first World Cup semi-final since 1990, was cleared of wrongdoing over the controversial tax regime that paved the way for his honor.

After weeks of discussions between HMRC and Whitehall, it was concluded that Southgate, 54, had not broken the rules.

According to The Sun on Sunday, he is now expected to follow in the footsteps of Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Alf Ramsey and receive the gongs.

Southgate’s spokesman told the newspaper he was a “proud Englishman” who had “always paid his taxes”.

The source said Sun on Sunday: “Now he has passed the inspection and people call him ‘Sir Gareth’.”

The England international stepped down in July after losing a second consecutive European Championship final

Southgate, 54, stepped down as manager in July after leading the Three Lions to two Euro finals and a World Cup semi-final in eight years.

A Cabinet Office spokesman said: “It would be inappropriate to comment on potential award recipients.”
